Manufactured pigments are synthetically recolored mineral colorants designed to produce bright, contemporary hues with consistent performance.
A manufactured pigment is created through controlled chemical or industrial processes to achieve precise color consistency, high purity, and enhanced performance. Unlike natural earth pigments, these pigments are engineered to deliver stronger tinting strength, cleaner hues, and improved stability across a wide range of applications.
They offer excellent lightfastness, weather resistance, and compatibility with most binders, including acrylics, oils, water-based mediums, lime-compatible formulations, and cementitious mixes (application dependent).
Key characteristics:
-
Compatible with a wide range of binders and mediums, including acrylic and oil paints, water-based systems, resins, plasters, and cementitious mixes. Their stable formulation delivers predictable, repeatable results, making them well suited for artists, makers, and formulators who require dependable colour output.
-
Designed for professional and creative use, these pigments provide strong tinting strength, excellent lightfastness, and uniform particle size for smooth, even dispersion. Some manufactured pigments may require mulling before use. Because pigment granulometry varies, testing a small batch is recommended before undertaking a larger project.
-
A maximum ratio of 5–10% pigment by volume is recommended in paint, binder, or cement/concrete mixes to preserve the integrity of the final product. For best results, dilute pigment in lukewarm water before adding it to your chosen medium. Refer to attached images for examples of shade development in lime paint and decorative cement at a 10% ratio.
-
Powder colorant: manufactured pigments can be blended together to create custom shades. Maintain a ratio of 5–10% pigment by volume.
-
80 ml / 2.7fl oz of pigment will tint approximately 1 liter / 1 quart of paint, decorative plaster, or finish to the reference shade, depending on the base color used.
-
80 ml / 2.7fl oz of pigment will tint up to 1 kg / 2.2lbs of white cement or concrete mix to the reference shade. When used with grey cement, color results will vary.
-
This collection contains no pigments with heavy metals. All manufactured pigments are imported from Europe and selected by the TerraChrom team for their distinctive color profiles. They are non-toxic when used as intended.
-
These pigments have been tested in our lime paints, decorative cement finishes, and select watercolor applications created in collaboration with our customers. Example results are shown on individual product pages.
Smaller pigment packages are sold by volume, while larger 1 kg / 2.2lbs bags are sold by weight. Label values such as 80 ml / 2.7 oz or 150 ml / 5 oz refer to volume, not weight. Because pigment densities vary significantly and our paint recipes are volume-based, smaller sizes are sold by volume to ensure consistency.
Like natural earth and oxide pigments, enhanced pigments can be used in concrete and decorative cement applications. However, they do not have the same coloring strength as the SP Super Pigment line, which is recommended for highly saturated colors such as bright reds, blues, and greens. When working with cement or mortar, a maximum of 10% pigment by volume should be respected, and a white cement or mortar base is recommended for optimal color clarity.
* Pigments are shipped in bags or containers depending on size and packaging options.
** Colors shown are for reference only. Actual colors may vary depending on screen settings, base material, and application method.
