Choosing a natural wall finish is about more than finding the perfect colour. The material itself can completely change the look and feel of a space—from the soft tonal movement of a mineral paint to the depth and texture of a hand-applied plaster.
TerraChrom offers a range of natural paints and finishes, each with its own texture, application method and character. Use the comparison below to explore the different finishes and see how each one transforms the same space. Then, keep reading for a closer look at each option and how to choose the right one for your project.
Lime Paint
A smooth, matte lime finish with soft, cloudy tonal movement that gives walls natural depth without adding physical texture. Applied by brush, the subtle variations in colour and visible movement create the characteristic softly aged appearance of traditional limewash. Suitable for interior and exterior use, Lime Paint works particularly well on absorbent mineral surfaces, including brick, where its breathable nature allows moisture to move through the substrate.
The finish can range from relatively subtle and uniform to more visibly mottled depending on application technique, dilution and the surface beneath it. Unlike the granular character of Textured Lime Paint, the interest here comes primarily from colour variation and brush movement rather than texture.
Texture: Smooth / minimal physical texture
Movement: Soft, cloudy tonal variation with natural brush movement
Sheen: Matte
Application: Brush; appearance can be adjusted through application technique and dilution
Overall look: Soft, mineral, naturally varied and traditionally limewashed
Best for: Creating a classic limewash look on interior or exterior walls, particularly brick and other absorbent mineral surfaces
Skill level: Beginner–Intermediate
Also available as an all-in-one Limewash Kit, which includes the appropriate base coat for easy application over previously painted surfaces.
Textured Lime Paint
A sandy, granular lime finish with visible brush movement and subtle surface texture. Applied with a brush in multiple directions, the fine aggregate catches the light and creates gentle variation across the wall, giving the surface more depth and character than a smooth paint while retaining a natural, matte appearance.
The finish can be left with its characteristic brushed texture, or built up in 2–3 coats and lightly burnished with a trowel to create a more pronounced, concrete-inspired effect. Suitable for interior and exterior walls, it can be used as a decorative finish on its own or as a textured base coat beneath other lime paints and coatings.
Texture: Sandy / fine granular
Movement: Visible, multidirectional brush movement
Sheen: Matte; subtle variation where the texture catches the light
Application: Brush; optional trowel burnishing for a concrete effect
Overall look: Natural, tactile and softly textured
Best for: Adding subtle texture and depth to walls; rustic, Mediterranean or concrete-inspired finishes
Skill level: Beginner–Intermediate

Also available as an all-in-one Textured Lime Paint Kit, which includes the appropriate base coat for a complete application system.
Milk Paint
A smooth, matte-to-velvety finish with a soft, understated appearance and very little surface texture. Supplied as a natural milk-based powder that is mixed with water before application, Milk Paint creates a more uniform finish than lime-based paints, while still retaining the character of a traditional natural coating. It can also be adapted to create decorative effects such as whitewashed or distressed finishes.
Milk Paint is self-priming on many surfaces, including drywall, previously painted surfaces, untreated wood and wood furniture, plaster, clay, and lime-based or other natural coatings. For high-traffic or wet areas, a protective varnish, oil or wax can be added to make the surface more durable or washable.
Texture: Smooth / soft velvety finish
Movement: Minimal; generally more uniform than lime finishes
Sheen: Matte
Application: Mix powder with water and apply 1–3 coats; typically 2–3 coats for optimal results
Overall look: Soft, understated and naturally matte
Best for: Interior walls and ceilings, furniture, and projects where a smooth natural finish is preferred; also suitable for whitewashed or distressed effects
Skill level: Beginner
Natura
A smooth, matte mineral finish with a clean and uniform appearance, Natura offers much less visible movement than limewash, making it a good choice when you want the natural qualities of a mineral-based coating without a pronounced decorative effect. The water-based formula is 95% natural and can be used either as a primer for natural coatings or as a finished wall paint when applied in two coats. It comes untinted and can be coloured with natural pigments to create light shades.
Easy to apply by either brush or roller, Natura is suitable for interior walls, ceilings and decorative mouldings, including drywall, wood and previously painted surfaces.
Texture: Smooth / fine
Movement: Minimal; even and uniform
Sheen: Matte
Application: Brush or roller; two coats when used as a finish paint
Overall look: Clean, soft and understated
Best for: Interior walls and ceilings where a smooth, uniform natural finish is desired; particularly good for ceilings and decorative mouldings
Skill level: Beginner
Stucco Coating
A smooth, satiny decorative wall finish with subtle marbled effects, Stucco creates more depth and refinement than a standard painted surface. Its creamy consistency is designed for decorative application, allowing gentle tonal variation and movement to develop across the surface for a polished, handcrafted appearance. Made from 100% natural ingredients with 0.00 g/L VOCs, it is intended for interior use.
Unlike the soft cloudiness of Lime Paint or the granular surface of Textured Lime Paint, Stucco has a smoother, more refined character with a slight satin quality. It can also be protected after drying with wax, glaze, or Aqua Varnish depending on the level of protection required.
Texture: Smooth / fine
Movement: Subtle marbling and tonal variation
Sheen: Satin
Application: Decorative coating applied to prepared interior surfaces
Overall look: Smooth, refined and softly marbled
Best for: Interior feature walls, decorative wall panels, mouldings and other surfaces where a more polished decorative finish is desired
Skill level: Intermediate
Clay Coating
A finely textured clay-based finish with a soft, velvety matte appearance, Clay Coating gives interior walls gentle physical texture and natural depth without the sheen or polished character of Stucco. It can be applied in thicker layers to help smooth and refine rough or uneven surfaces, making the finished wall feel substantial and tactile while remaining understated. It is 100% natural, VOC-free and breathable.
Applied with a stainless-steel trowel in two layers, Clay Coating creates a more earthy, softly textured surface than the paint finishes in the comparison. It can be tinted with mineral pigments, and previously painted surfaces should first be prepared with TerraChrom's Textured Base Coat.
Texture: Fine / softly textured
Movement: Subtle natural variation created by the trowel application
Sheen: Velvety matte
Application: Stainless-steel trowel; applied in two layers
Overall look: Earthy, tactile, soft and naturally refined
Best for: Interior walls where a natural, matte textured finish is desired; particularly useful for refining rough or uneven surfaces
Skill level: Intermediate
Lime Coating
A softly granular lime finish with a velvety matte appearance, Lime Coating brings subtle physical texture and natural depth to interior walls. Made from aged and filtered lime putty, it has a refined mineral character that sits between a smooth lime paint and a more pronounced plaster finish. The surface remains breathable, while the fine grain creates gentle visual variation as light moves across the wall.
Supplied ready to use in paste form, Lime Coating can be tinted with natural pigments to create subtle, nuanced colour variations. It contains 97% natural ingredients with extremely low VOC content and is intended for interior vertical surfaces. TerraChrom recommends it for skilled applicators, so it is one of the more technique-dependent finishes in this comparison.
Texture: Fine / softly granular
Movement: Subtle variation created by the mineral texture and application
Sheen: Velvety matte
Application: Ready-to-use lime putty paste; decorative application requires some technique
Overall look: Refined, mineral, softly textured and natural
Best for: Interior walls where you want more tactile depth than lime paint without a heavily textured plaster appearance
Skill level: Intermediate–Advanced
Marmorino
A very fine lime and marble-dust finish with a smooth, refined surface, Marmorino creates a more polished decorative effect than TerraChrom’s other mineral coatings. Made from aged and filtered lime paste, its extremely fine particle size—up to just 40 microns—allows the material to be worked into a sleek surface with subtle tonal movement and the natural depth characteristic of traditional Italian lime finishes. It is entirely natural, free from petrochemical components and intended for interior use.
Applied with a stainless-steel or plastic float, Marmorino can be used on walls as well as doors and furniture. It comes as a ready-to-use white paste that can be tinted, and a brush can also be used when creating a waxed effect.
Texture: Very fine / smooth
Movement: Subtle tonal variation created through the hand-applied finish
Sheen: Smooth, with a subtle natural lustre that can become more pronounced through polishing
Application: Stainless-steel or plastic trowel/float
Overall look: Elegant, refined and softly polished with subtle marble-like depth
Best for: Interior feature walls, doors and furniture where a sophisticated, very fine decorative lime finish is desired
Skill level: Intermediate–Advanced
