Tartaric Acid

Tartaric acid combined with calcium carbonate produces an effervescent reaction.   If mixed with natural earth pigments, the effervescence optimizes the coloring properties of the pigment and facilitates its dispersion.  (See Effervescent Earth Pigments)

Tartaric Acid is also used as a mordant in dyeing.

Tartaric acid is a white, crystalline organic acid:  HO2C-C2H2(OH)2-CO2H
