Ultramarine Blue (PB29) – Vibrant Blue Mineral Pigment
TerraChrom Ultramarine Blue is a vibrant inorganic blue pigment valued for its rich colour, good lightfastness, and excellent resistance to alkaline conditions.
Also known as Pigment Blue 29 (PB29), ultramarine blue is a sulfur-containing sodium aluminosilicate pigment used to colour paints, coatings, plasters, and mineral-based finishes.
Its distinctive blue colour makes it suitable for creating vivid blue finishes or blending with other pigments to achieve custom shades. Ultramarine blue is generally compatible with alkaline mineral systems, although finished-product performance depends on the binder, formulation, and application conditions.
Key Features
-
Rich, vibrant blue colour
-
Inorganic mineral pigment
-
Generally good lightfastness
-
Excellent alkali resistance
-
Suitable for a variety of paint and coating formulations
-
Insoluble in water
-
Suitable for interior and exterior decorative applications*
-
Supplied as a dry pigment powder
*Exterior durability and colour stability depend on the finished coating system, pigment concentration, and exposure conditions.
Recommended Uses
Ultramarine blue can be used in a variety of decorative and mineral applications, including:
-
Acrylic, oil, and watercolour paints
-
Limewash and mineral paints
-
Decorative plasters and stucco

Use & Handling
For best results, disperse the pigment thoroughly using a mixing method and medium appropriate for the selected binder. The final colour and performance depend on pigment concentration, formulation, substrate, and application conditions.
Important: Ultramarine blue is sensitive to acids. Contact with acids can release toxic and highly flammable hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas. Avoid use with acidic materials or formulations.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, with containers tightly closed and away from acids.
Safety
Ultramarine blue is not classified as hazardous under the Canadian Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR). However, standard precautions should be followed when handling the dry powder.
-
Avoid breathing airborne dust.
-
Work in a well-ventilated area.
-
Avoid contact with eyes and prolonged contact with skin.
-
Use appropriate protective equipment when necessary.
-
Keep away from acids and incompatible materials.
-
Avoid excessive heat. Heating to approximately 400 °C may cause decomposition and sulfur dioxide release.
-
Keep out of reach of children.
Refer to the current TerraChrom Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete safety and handling information.
