Orange Iron Oxide – Synthetic Mineral Pigment (PR101 + PY42)

Synthetic iron oxide pigment | Warm orange colour | Pigment Red 101 + Pigment Yellow 42

TerraChrom Orange Iron Oxide is a synthetic inorganic mineral pigment combining Pigment Red 101 (PR101) and Pigment Yellow 42 (PY42) to produce a warm, earthy orange colour. Formulated from iron oxide minerals, this pigment offers reliable colouring performance for compatible paints, coatings, and mineral-based materials.

With controlled colour consistency and relative tinting strength of 95–105% against a reference standard in cement-based testing, Orange Iron Oxide is particularly well suited to applications where repeatable colour development is important.

Its versatile mineral composition makes it suitable for concrete, mortar, decorative plasters, limewash, and a range of water-based and oil-based paints. Final colour, dispersion, and durability depend on the binder, pigment concentration, substrate, and application conditions.

Key Features

  • Warm orange mineral colour – Creates earthy orange tones in compatible binders and finishes.

  • Synthetic iron oxide pigment – Blend of Pigment Red 101 and Pigment Yellow 42.

  • Controlled colour consistency – Defined colour tolerances for cement-based applications.

  • Consistent tinting strength – Relative tinting strength of 95–105% against a reference standard in cement.

  • High iron oxide content – Approximately 86–95% Fe₂O₃ (typical guide range).

  • Versatile applications – Suitable for compatible paints, plasters, concrete, mortar, and decorative coatings.

  • Fine powder form – Supplied as a dry pigment for incorporation into suitable binders.

Recommended Uses

  • Limewash and mineral paints, subject to compatibility testing

  • Decorative plasters, stucco, and mineral finishes

  • Concrete, mortar, and cement colouring

  • Acrylic and water-based paints

  • Oil-based paints and decorative coatings

  • Interior and exterior architectural finishes, subject to finished-system testing

  • Compatible resin-based coatings, subject to formulation testing

Mixing & Application

Orange Iron Oxide can be incorporated into compatible mineral, water-based, and oil-based binders to create warm orange decorative finishes.

For water-based paints and limewash, gradually incorporate the pigment using suitable wetting and dispersion methods to obtain an even colour. For cement, mortar, and dry mineral mixes, distribute the pigment thoroughly throughout the dry ingredients before adding liquids.

For oil-based paints and coatings, use an appropriate dispersion method compatible with the selected binder. Resin-based formulations should be tested individually to establish compatibility and colour performance.

Recommended pigment dosage: No universal dosage is specified. Determine the appropriate concentration through small trial batches, taking into account the desired colour intensity, binder, and application requirements.

Always prepare a small test batch to evaluate colour, dispersion, binder compatibility, and finished-surface performance before proceeding with a larger project.

Handling & Storage

Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Avoid generating or inhaling airborne dust, ensure adequate ventilation, and wear suitable eye protection when handling the dry pigment.

Orange Iron Oxide is not classified as hazardous under the Canadian Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR), based on available product information. Standard precautions for handling mineral powders should nevertheless be followed.

Refer to the current TerraChrom Safety Data Sheet for detailed safety and handling information.
