Dammar Gum

$ 173.00 MXN

Dammar gum, or Damar gum, is a natural resin obtained mainly from Shorea trees (Dipterocarpaceae family), found in Southeast Asia (especially Indonesia).

  • Comes in pale yellow to white crystals or lumps.

Main uses

  • Art varnishes:

    • Used to make dammar varnish, a glossy, clear, traditional final varnish for oil paintings.

    • Offers good clarity but can yellow slightly over time.

  • Mediums for oil painting:

    • Can be dissolved in turpentine to create painting mediums that improve flow and increase gloss.

  • Crafts & encaustics:

    • Added to beeswax to harden and increase transparency.

  • Traditional wood finishes and incense:

    • Used in natural varnishes and as a component in incense blends.

Water-Resistant Coatings with Dammar Gum
How It Works
  • Dammar gum is a hydrophobic resin (repels water).

  • When combined with beeswax, carnauba wax, or natural oils like linseed oil , it forms a protective barrier on wood, paper, or other porous surfaces.

  • Ideal for small craft projects, furniture touch-ups, or sealing natural materials.

Simple Recipe for a Natural Water-Resistant Coating
Ingredients:
  • 1 part dammar gum (crushed)

  • 2 parts beeswax (or a blend of beeswax + carnauba wax)

  • Optional: 1 part linseed oil (for easier application)

Steps:
  1. Gently melt the beeswax over low heat.

  2. Add crushed dammar gum and stir until fully dissolved.

  3. Optional: Stir in linseed oil for a thinner, more spreadable coating.

  4. Apply to wood, paper, or other porous surfaces with a soft brush or cloth.

  5. Let cool and harden — leaves a glossy, water-resistant finish.

Uses
  • Wood furniture or small wooden objects

  • Sealing natural fibers or paper crafts

  • Encaustic or mixed-media art

  • Outdoor or moisture-prone decorative items
